He is one of Ireland’s finest contemporary novelist and playwright and was Laureate for Irish Fiction from 2019 to 2021. He is the author of 10 novels, is the only writer to have won the prestigious Costa Book of the Year twice – for The Secret Scripture and Days Without End – and has won the Independent Booksellers Award and the Walter Scott Prize. He had two consecutive novels shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and has also won the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Prize, the Irish Book Awards Novel of the Year and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
